Laparoscopy
General SurgeryReproductive Medicine
Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique that involves inserting a laparoscope and other surgical instruments through one or several small incisions in the abdomen to examine and perform surgery on internal organs. A laparoscope is a long, tube-like instrument with a light source and camera at one end, which transmits images from inside the body to an external monitor, allowing doctors to view the internal situation. Laparoscopic surgery is commonly used for diagnosing and treating problems with abdominal and pelvic organs such as the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, liver, and gallbladder. Compared to traditional open surgery, laparoscopic surgery offers advantages such as smaller incisions, faster recovery, and shorter hospital stays.
Applications
Laparoscopic surgery is applicable for the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of abdominal and pelvic diseases, including but not limited to:
- Gynaecological Diseases: Endometriosis, ovarian cysts, infertility treatment, myomectomy (removal of uterine fibroids), tubal inspection or ligation, etc.
- Digestive System Diseases: Including appendectomy, cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal), diagnosis and treatment of intestinal diseases, hernia repair, etc.
- Urological Surgery: Removing adrenal tumours, nephrectomy (kidney removal), etc.
- Liver and Pancreatic Surgery: Laparoscopic surgery also offers a treatment option for certain liver and pancreas diseases.
- Cancer Surgery: Laparoscopic surgery can be used for tumour removal or biopsy for certain types of abdominal cancers.
Advantages of Laparoscopy
- Minimal Trauma: Laparoscopy Surgery is performed through a few small incisions, resulting in less trauma than traditional open surgery.
- Quick Recovery: The small incisions mean shorter recovery times, allowing patients to return to their daily lives more quickly.
- Less Pain: Due to the smaller incisions, post-operative pain is usually less severe, offering a higher level of comfort for the patient.
- Shorter Hospital Stay: Many laparoscopic surgeries can be done on the same day, eliminating the need for an extended hospital stay.
- Lower Risk: Compared to traditional open surgery, laparoscopic surgery has a lower risk of infection and other complications.
- Better Cosmetic Results: The more minor scars the incisions leave are more aesthetically pleasing and acceptable to patients.
